Hawthorn Leslie No.2859 to visit Foxfield for Victorian Weekend!

Thanks to our friends at Tanfield Railway, We are very pleased to announce that Keighley Corporation Gas Dept. No.2 is set to visit Foxfield for our Victorian Weekend over 4th-6th May 2019.

No.2 is an 0-4-0ST with 12 x 18″ outside cylinders and 3ft 0.5″ diameter driving wheels. She was built by R&W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co Ltd at their Forth Banks Works in Newcastle upon Tyne. Our locomotive was works number 2859, ex-works on 27/9/1911 to Keighley Corporation Gas Dept, Keighley Gas Works, West Riding of Yorkshire, where she was numbered 2.

The locomotive has been specially chosen to visit for the weekend by Foxfield Railway and Knotty Coach Trust volunteers as plans are underway for the relaunch to traffic of the Knotty Heritage Coach No.23 during the weekend following a painstaking restoration.
The re-launch to traffic on NSR No.23 is a truly momentous occasion in railway heritage as our Knotty Heritage Train run's for the first time on Foxfield Rails as a three coach train.
A suitable, matching braked vehicle has been needed for use with the Knotty Heritage Train since it entered passenger service in August 2014. As no Knotty Brake coaches of any era were still thought to exist, the Knotty Coach Trust's first thoughts were to create a replica, externally representative of an 1870s four wheeled 20ft Knotty Brake.
Amazingly the Trust was then offered three carriage bodies at a site near Rudyard Lake, one of which was a Brake third, though in the worst imaginable condition. Many parts had to be excavated from the ground in 2014-15, where they had fallen 50 years before. It is a Stoke-built 1880s four wheeled 25ft Brake third which seated 20 passengers plus space for luggage, milk, etc, and the guard.

Further information is available here about either Keighley Gas Works No.2  or  Knotty Coach Trust.
